Hello my name is David Preece, son of John Preece and Margaret Mclean. Brother to Sarah and Jennifer Preece.
We all live in New Zealand... although Sarah is based in the UK at the moment.
My farther John moved out to NZ when he was young with his family. Mother Joan, farther Terrance, brother Les and sister Vivian - his youngest sister Angela was borne here in NZ.
I have relatives Rosemary and Bil 'amongst others' over in the UK who are the siblings of my Gran - Joan Preece.
That's about the extent of my knowledge of my farther's family as there are a few secrets that are yet to be discovered.
Once again, hello to you all and it's great to see that there are so many Preece's out there! :)

This family tree was of interest to me for Elizabeth ARTON in Rebecca's forbears. Like you, I found no baptism for Elizabeth, or for Ann Arton who married George Hardy in Clenchwarton in 1800 and was witness at Elizabeth's wedding. From other evidence, I thought they were most likely daughters of William and Ann Arton who had come to Norfolk about 1778 from East Yorkshire with three young daughters who all married in this corner of Norfolk. Was the baptism of Elizabeth Harton in 1790, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth,in Walpole?

Hello Everyone,
My name is Rhiannon Susan Leyden-Preece and I am mentioned earlier by my older sister, Ngaio.
I seem to never have enough time to contact relatives, because due to the seperation of my parents I have so many of them.
However, I'd still love to know more because I am a bit naive as to this side of the family.
I do have many Preece relatives in New Zealand, mainly based around Hamilton, but I like in Bristol, England.
My dad, Mike Preece tells us of a family coat if arms and any more information on that matter would be dear.
Thankyou, and I will try harder to get in touch with relatives.
Rhiannon

Please helep I'm still trying to trace my family tree but have come to a stand still. My father Thomas Francis Preece born in Ludlow Shropshire passed away on the 2 nd January 2009 the last of his family. It was very sad to all because we could not trace his fathers side of the family. he was born James Walker in 1869 at red furlong aston munslow but changed his name to Preece when he married my grandmother. My grnadfathers mother was Preece before she married into the walker family but then married a preece i think because when she passed away she was preece.
If anyone has any information could you please contact me I would be very gratefull Thankyou

He had one sister, Irene, an older half brother John Mason, and half sister Rhoda (both last name Mason). Their mother was Anne Jane (or Jane Anne, known as Ginny) Mason (nee Martin). Hi
My mother is a preece. Her parents were Eunice and Robert Preece from Cardiff. My great grandfather was Trevor Preece who came from Cowbridge (and played cricket for Glamorgan)! I know he had a sister called Myfanwy and I think there was a Catherine (not sure if she was my great grandmother or a great-great aunt).
My great aunts and uncles were called Trevor and Nesta.
My grandma did lots of research on the family tree but she unfortunately passed away last year. We also have family in Coventry.
Its so interesting reading about all the Preeces out there! A very mixed bunch!

Hi everyone -My dad, Cyril Nathaniel Preece was born in 1913 in Winnipeg, Man. Canada to Samuel & Maude Preece. They also had an older son, Leslie - Granddad was a boilermaker for the C.N. Railway. Leslie was 16 years older than dad. Leslie returned to England - married Mary, had a son David. That's all I remember hearing about him. Granddad had several siblings in Canada, Ben, James (B.C.) and Nancy (Fort William, Ont.) have had contact with Nancy's grandson in U.S. tho not lately. I have two sisters - no brothers so the Preece name has petered out on our end. Glad to know it still continues.
Would love to contact some of our relatives in England if they read this site.

My father is Micheal Francis Preece, and I don't know much about the rest of my family. I'd like to know you all. I have a younger sister, Rhiannon Susan Leyden-Preece, and I'm sure she'd want to know more. I live in Bristol, in England, but my Dad lived in New Zeland as does alot of his family. I don't know any relatives in England, but have alot in Australia and New Zeland. I don't know for sure, but lyndsie could be a cousin of mine...? A while ago me, my sister and my auntie [Lorraine Preece] and uncle [who's name I've forgotten] went to Manchester to try to find out more about my grandfather. He had alot of brothers and sisters. I don't know anything about my family, and I'm sick of it, but apparently my dad has a Preece family emblem or something.
When I know more about everything I'll write again, but at the moment I'm pretty clueless. If anyone thinkss they know me or my dad, please tell me.

My dad is James Raymond Preece son of Raymond & Muriel Preece brother of Muriel, Patricia, Richard & the youngest Sandra (I'm pretty sure there's another sibling in there I've forgotten). The family is from Worcestershire and apart from dad they all stayed in the area.
Dad moved to Australia back the 70's to help design the carpet in the Sydney Opera House. We have no other known relatives over here.
Dad also has 2 daughters Sarah & Victoria that grew up in Worstershire and lived briefly in Australia with him.

Hi,
All I know of our Family history is that my Great Grandfather had a business in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.I am led to believe that he drove the miners to the mines. But went bust in the 1920's recession. It was then that they moved to Harbourne Birmingham. I was told that he had his own coach/company? I believe that he had three children, but I am not sure!
One was my Grandfather Benjamin, and I believe that their were two Brothers. They both emigrated. One to Australia and the other to South Africa.
My Grandfather Benjamin Married Laura Lamb and they had three children Stanley Preece (my Father) and Brother Ben and Sister Joan.
If anyone can tie this family to their own please inform me, so that I can start to complete my Fathers side of the family tree.
Thank you,
Eileen.

Hello hello fellow Preece's - I also live in Australia (last entry I read was from another Aussie - pronounced Ozzie), "The Shire" in fact which is in Sydney, New South Wales; Gymea Bay to be exact. It looks like most of you are writing from the UK and some from the US.
My name is Jacqueline Ann Preece and have married a Deme (De'Me) so our 8 mnth old is now named Soraya Preece Deme. My father's name in Australia has always been Ivor Preece (named after the famous footballer - 'cos my dad played football, representing Northampton I think). However, he was christened Richard Peter Preece, his father was also a Richard so he was then called Peter Richard Preece and then his nickname Ivor stuck - even when he and my mum (Diane Pearl Preece) immigrated to America and had my brother, Michael Alexander Preece in North Carolina (they lived in and around New York to start then moved down south).
They then went back to Northampton after my dad's dad died and had my sister, Karen Alexis Preece. They then immigrated on the Queen Mary as the "10 pound pommies" in approx. late '50 s to NSW, Australia where I was born.
I was born in Sutherland Hospital "the Shire" in 1966, got married to a Tirado and became (not officially) Jacqueline Preece-Tirado but now married again and may become Preece-Deme.
Sadly, my father was an only child and both his parents are now deceased - can't remember their names (never knew them); my brother Michael Preece has never married and will probably never have children; my sister Karen Preece has married but changed her name so her daughter Shelby won't be carrying on the name; that is why I gave I'm not eager to change my name and why my daughter Soraya has Preece as her middle name. Looks like the PREECE name for our family stops here!
BTW, one of my first jobs I ever had as a kid (and still living at home) was working for an Advertising Agency called Finlay Preece Advertising - I worked for Terry Preece who happened to live down the st

Hey there fellow Preece's. I'm Matt Preece from South Wales. Bit of info for you, Preece is actually a Welsh name. It translates from the old Welsh "Ap-Rhys", basically meaning son of Rhys. So at some point in all your lives you all had a welsh ancestor called Rhys. As this was quite a popular name during the late 10 th century chances are that we're not all related. But we do all have welsh lineage so you can be proud of that.
Happy searching

Hi, I found your Preece website by chance - I Googled my surname! I was interested to spot your ancestor William Leivers siblings - namely Emmanuel. My father always said his grandfather was called Emmanuel and came from the Kirky in Ashfield area - surely there weren't two Emmanual Leivers in Nottinghamshire around the same time!! However, my grandfather (Dad's father) was called Charles, and this name doesn't appear on your tree. He married a woman called Hannah ??? I would love to 'talk' to anyone with any more relevant info ??? Or maybe I will have to go down the Family History route myself!

Well Hello all the Preece family members out there. I am in shock at finding so many as it is not a common name where I am. I am from Leeds West Yorkshire and my father was Reginald Ivor Preece and his father was Ivor Preece. My father once told me never to research my father tree as his father was one of 22 children, 11 children each to my great grandfather and two different women. I dont know how true that is but if anyone knows of an Ivor Preece appearing on their family tree who was born at the turn of the century then we may be related. I know that the family had links to south Wales but thats all I know. My father died in 1994 and I have no further info than that. If you think you may know my side of the family then please email me as I am now intriged to know more.

Further to origin of Preece, I was always given to understand that the Rhys part was welsh for "King", so Ap Rhys was probably originally a son of the King, without being a prince, if you understand my meaning..a lot of them about!
Rather like our "Fitzroy" which has the same illegitimate meaning.
Cheers,

Comment by Andrew Preece:
The name 'PREECE' is the English version of the Welsh 'Ap Rhys' meaning 'son of Rhys'. I also suspect there isn't single origin for all the PREECEs - the conversion of Ap Rhys to PREECE occurred in several places along the Welsh border in Herefordshire and Shropshire. For more details see the PREECE one name study run by Ian Preece (to the best of our knowledge not related to any PREECE on this site) at http://www.preece67.fsnet.co.uk/. This is also a good place to ask for help about your PREECE ancestry - Ian helped me immensely with my PREECE ancestors.

Those interested in Abraham Provost (1674-1721)
(Baptised March 22 1673/4, French congregation, Thorney, CAM, ENG. Death: February 1721 Parson Drove CAM ENG) might be interested in the will of Sarah Flahau dated 6 March 1705/6. Sarah Flahau was the mother of Mary (bapt 2 Apr 1682 at Thorney: French register #922), who was referred to as Mary Provest [sic] in the will. She was left £10, as were Sarah's gradchildren Jacob and Abraham Provost. I believe this Mary is the wife of Abraham Provost (1674-1721). For anyone interested in the will, it is available from TNA (PROB 11/487). If anyone is interested in learning more about Sarah Flahau (nee Holmes, wife of Jacob Flahau) and the Flahau ancestry please contact me.

Hi to all Preeces!!!
I thought I'd put my penny's worth in here! I'm about 4 th/5 th generation of a Preece family in North East of England.
I've discovered grass roots from the USA to Hartlepool and others.
BUT I may be a fake Preece, birth and death records have shown that our original family name has been mispelled at some point and a great, great grandfather was given the surname Preece on his birth certificate. The family was harder to trace from there, backwards as our family name was originally Pricce.
Just wondering if anyone has had similar findings...
Thanks all
Anthony

Hi Andrew, I have just started researching my family since retiring through illness. I know I am descended from the Provost family in Thorney but believe my gt,gt,gt,gt grandfather to have been a Samuel Provost of Thorney also I believe to be a farmer in the mid 18 th cent. What I do know is that there were several French Hugenot families in that area living in French Drove and hope to visit the Cambridge records office in the near future. I spoke to the office today, before I saw your message oddly enough, and they say they have records such as marriages, births etc going back to the 14 th cent and I can make an appointment to go and look at them. For me this shouldn't be too hard now I know this as I live in Cambridge -if I am well enough. If you are interested I can look for your antecedent at the same time and let you know. I have some information about the more recent past from elderly family but all a bit garbled beyond what they actually know so have to sort the romantic stories from the facts.
Let me know if I can help you and will see what I can do. Who knows we could be very distant cousins!
Will wait for your reply,
Happy New Year,
Rose

My Grandparents settled in Marston ( Nr Kingbury)and we lived in Whitacre Heath for many years, then Mum and Dad moved to Coleshill in 1988.Dad had two sisters Nancy who married John Furber, both now deceased, and Kathlene who lives in Canada.

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone can help me, my maiden name is Ottewell, I am researching my father's line and have found one of my ancestors has disappeared. His name was Isaac Ottewell christened on 28/03/1814, he married Jane Saxton on 21/08/1832, he had atleast 4 children named Samuel b.1833, Hannah b.1840 approx, Mary b. 1836 approx, and Elizabeth b. 1835 approx. Now they do appear on the 1841 census living in Horsley Woodhouse, however after that they are no where to be found. I've searched the death records to no avail, so the only thing I can think of is that they emigrated to either Australia/New Zealand, or America/Canada, if there is anyone out there that is researching the Ottewell line and has this information I would appreciate it if you could email me on nsojones 1969

Hi, have read your website with great interest. Next year I am marrying a Preece and we've been having great fun (if not much success) looking into his family tree.
We can get back as far as his great grandparents, HENRY and ELIZABETH Preece from near Bradford. They had HERBERT Preece, who married a VERA and they had PAUL Preece, father of ADAM Preece who I will be marrying next year - follow all that?!
Adam's granddad, Herbert, told us that his great Grandparents had come from Yarpole near Leominster in Hereford. On the way back from holiday the other day we stopped off to look at the graveyard and found 4 Preece graves, 1 in such bad condition only the first name could be read and the others will follow shortly. These are MARTHA Preece (died 1840), married to WILLIAM Preece (inscription illegible). And THOMAS Preece (died 1838) married to SARAH Preece (died 1820).
We haven't figured out yet whether any of these 4 Preeces are ancestors of our branch of Preeces, though we have great hopes of Thomas and Sarah, as we hope they are the Thomas and Sarah mentioned in the family story below, however the only parish record I have been able to find doesn't show any grandchildren issuing.
Anyways - family story: Thomas Preece was a coachman for the wealthy Howe family until he ran away to marry their daughter (Lady?) Sarah Howe at which point the family disowned her and, some say, took a hit out on Thomas Preece...
So - does anybody know any of the names in this extensive list? Have we got any information right or wrong? Either send me an e-mail or message me on here, we'd love to hear from you!
Milla

I find your website very helpful in filling gaps in my family tree.
I, John Keith Dennison, am a great grandson of John Dennison (1821-1903) mentioned in the Preece family tree.
My father, Frank Herbert Dennison, born in 1915 and now aged 92 and living in Sheffield, must be his only surviving grandchild.
My father was the third son of John Robert Dennison (1860-1939) (also in your family tree) from the latter's second marriage to Edith Badham (1882-1951) in 1904.
I note that my great grandfather had a daughter named Jane (born 1853) who had a daughter named Fanny Provost Wright (1875-1955) who had a daughter named Elsie Bloor, who had a son called Alan Gregory Preece, whose son is Andrew Preece.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who can give me further information about my grandfather, John Robert Dennison's first marriage to Lottie (born 1857) and their descendants.

Hello,
I am Thomas Michael Jaques from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. My grandfather, Joseph Jaques passed away sometime in the 1950's or 1960's. I had an Aunt named Ann as well. It is interesting to see these names on a family tree. As near as I can tell, I was named Thomas after my great grandfather. Our family appears to have come into Western Canada from the province of Ontario in Eastern Canada. I haven't been able to learn much about my family history as yet.

Zachariah Joseph Pattle was my third cousin, twice removed. In my Family Tree notes, researched by my brother, Roger, now deceased, it says Zachariah (1855-1931 London - buried in Streatham Hill Cemetery)was an actor, famous for his monologues, performed before royalty, including the Czar of Russia. His portrait, by James Gunn, hangs in The Savage Club, London. I am about to contact this club, to verify this fact. I cannot find any sign of this "Charles Pond" on the Internet, which I find odd! I can give you any information I have from our tree, in which you might be interested. How does this Zachariah fit into your Preece family, please? I couldn't find out on your website...I'm not too computer-wise! Look forward to your reply.

I have info with documents on the line of Janet Dalgarno, daughter of Alexander Dalgarno and Margaret Walker. I have been doing research for a friend who is a descendant of George Dalgarno and Margaret Walker and we are currently doing a site. I was just wondering how you are related to the Dalgarnos. Your site is really very good and informative and I commend you for putting outy the site it is a very valuable site for gen researchers.
God Bless

Very interested especially the Whatley strand.
I have a copy of the marriage cert. of Richard and Sarah Gane.
Tho' I can't find Richards birth. In the previous generation the family names of MORGAN and MARY HORTON married in 1764 are Hannah, Morgan, James, James, Mary, Thomas. It seems to me that Richard is part of this family the names being so similar especially MORGAN which is so unusual.

Thought I would google my name and came across this page for Laura May Dore. I have been a Dore for 8 years now. My husband, Simon, and his family came to Australia from England in the 70's. His fathers name is Sidney Francis Dore. Does any one know more about this?

I can't belive there are so many Preece's out there!!! I came across all this while looking up my surname on the web, was thinking of trying to trace my family tree. Im from Frome a town in somerset, England i have lived here since i was born in 1980. My dad is Ian born in mells a village near frome in 1959, and my grandfather was Geoffery Ivan Preece, who married Joyce Cavill. There are links with Preece's in wales one being a Thomas Preece in the 19 th century.
